Katie at @KLWSocials on Instagram has overcome imposter syndrome and gone outside her comfort zones to thrive in her business. One way to help circumvent her imposter syndrome she has a work buddy, another VA who she can talk to, she also takes a step back to the journal, takes a walk, and just recenters herself. Remembering not to compare herself to anyone else as everyone is unique. Embrace your own power as a VA and celebrate small wins.
She offers advice on the perspective of starting a VA business and how we can overcome obstacles. As she researched what she would do for her business it took 8 months for her to really solidify the deal. After all the success stories she saw online and the flexibility and ability to create a life around her business.
Realizing that beginning a business is hard, she conducted research on social media and, finally threw herself into the work. She pushes herself and took that leap of faith. She tried many things and always realized that you can never over-prepare or even can’t be prepared for this VA business. It is all dependent on the client's business and we need to realize its progress over perfection.
Things to remember:
Organization is key. Realizing is that we can't prepare for everything we need to remain organized so we can pivot and be adaptable as a VA.
Not every client is for you. Do not take it personally if a client doesn’t select you and utilize your discovery calls to understand pain points.
The almighty budget. Whether or not to work hourly or on retainer and make sure you know your worth.
Boundaries and work-life balance. Remember VAs do not work for the clients but with the clients.
Have work buddies. Find yourself a business buddy to bounce ideas off of so you do not feel alone. A nonjudgemental area so you have a community to lean on.
Avoid burnout. Take a step back and analyze your current business and prioritize yourself. Take a break from electronics.
Attracting clients to you
Being yourself and building trust with your audience is key. Sharing snippets of your life or behind-the-scenes (BTS). We have to differentiate ourselves from other VAs. Standing out relies on research and understanding your audience. Take your time with your audience and learn what they like and create content that pertains to them.
You also want brand awareness and word-of-mouth referrals. Sharing your business with friends and family are ways that can get the word out there is a great way to gain visibility. One thing Katie does is daily affirmations and gratitude so her social media is more personalized and not all about services, services, services!
Experimenting with email, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram reels. Even if you are shy you do not have to plaster your face all over social media. There are ways to be an introvert and have a successful business. You’re in control of your business and you have the power to set those boundaries and make yourself feel comfortable in your own business. Remember you don't work for a boss but you are your own boss.
Tips for working with clients
Break it down and scope out a plan. If you’re not ready to commit to many hours, then set expectations. Analyze your workload and understand what works for you. Some tips to help you work with clients will be setting competitive prices. Conduct market research on whether you want to do hourly or packages, ensuring you’re not pricing yourself too high to too low.
Have a specific niche? See what others are charging and what the industry rate and what VAs and social media managers are charging. You can easily ascertain the market by taking the time and researching the industry.
Another tip is to look for a VA coach and invest in yourself. Do not worry about the cost but the value it brings to you. There are many courses and masterclasses such as the Free Mini Masterclass offered by AIM. Find other resources such as youtube and TikTok which are free that can help you. Blogs and podcasts are also great time investments to look into.
Working for testimonials for when you first start out and help your new reputation. Your reputation is going to be built over time. Approach clients to intern for them in exchange for testimonials.
A Growth Mindset
Close your eyes and imagine your higher self. Break it down to what you need to do day by day to grow into this person.
A growth mindset describes a way of viewing challenges and setbacks. People who have a growth mindset believe that even if they struggle with certain skills, their abilities aren’t set in stone. They think that with work, their skills can improve over time.
