We sat down with Monica Joy, owner and founder of Origami Consulting, Assistant in Mind, and ItsMonica.com. A serial entrepreneur who has a passion for starting businesses and helping others achieve their dreams thru their start-ups.

  1. "What’s One Thing I Could Do Differently?” - Definitely manage my time better. Between running my businesses and handling clients, things sometimes slip through the cracks.

  2. “What Can I Do to Make You More Successful Today (or This Week, Month, Quarter, or Year)?” - Just keep doing what you’re doing and giving me your support!

  3. “What’s the Most Important Achievement You Hope to Accomplish in Your Current Role?” - To be able to take care of family.

  4. “What Are Your Career Goals?” - Help people launch the businesses of their dreams.

  5. “What Should I Know About Your Work and Management Style?” Are you a micromanager or hands-off chief? - Definitely hands-off. I love to let those who work with me get a chance to let their own individuality and creativity shine through their work.

  6. “How Would You Like to Receive Feedback From Me?” - I’m a big believer in honesty that’s delivered in a straightforward way.

  7. What was your previous job? - Project Manager.

  8. How much experience do you have? - 15+ years of professional experience.

  9. How did you get your current job? - I was laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic and needed a job that met my means. No one was offering the pay I needed, so I started my own business!

  10. What are your career aspirations? - To help people through their journey and support my family financially.

  11. What do you value in the job? Power and status? Intellectual gratification? Money? - I think as long as I know I did good work, that’s all I need.

  12. What do you value most in your direct reports? Creativity? Attention to detail? Efficiency? - All four!

  13. What matters most to you outside of work?Are you focused on your family, your hobbies, religion or politics? - Definitely family and religion.

  14. What three books would we find on your bookshelf at home? - The Picture of Dorian Gray, Atomic Habits, Americanah.

  15. What advice would you have for yourself if you could go back 20 years in your career? - Soak up as much knowledge as you can on the job and be patient with your career aspirations. Everything will fall into place.

  16. Have you ever considered a major change from this career (or company) and if so, what kept you here? - Not at all.

  17. Who outside of our industry inspires you? - Eartha Kitt

  18. What energizes you most about our company? - It’s potential.

  19. What keeps you up at night? - The following day ahead.

  20. What do you find most challenging about your role? - Finding balance.

  21. How do you define personal success? - Knowing that I’ve done my best to help people.

  22. What are the qualities you look for in emerging leaders throughout the company? - Those willing to take the initiative and get the work done.

  23. What are the three must-win battles for our division (company, team) this year? - Building our clientele, increasing revenue, and having a strong, reliable team.

  24. Do you think you are kind to yourself? - Depends on the day.

  25. What else do you still wanna practice? - Slowing down.

  26. What have you been hesitating to share, create or take action on? - Writing a book.

  27. Does the whole team know your strategy? - Yes.

  28. Do you know each of your team’s superpowers? - Of course! Or at least I like to believe so.

  29. Is each member on the team overperforming? Under performing? Or on track? - Too gossipy!

  30. Do you think your vision for the team’s trajectory line up with their vision for their own career trajectory? - I would believe so, yes.

  31. In the last three months, has the team grown in a noticeable way? - Yes, and I love to see my team's growth!

  32. What are the challenges ahead of our team? - I do worry that as more clients come in, will we be able to handle it.

  33. What are your expectations of me in this position? - You’re a valued team member/player!

  34. What advice would you give me at this point in my career? - As long as you work for the life and career you want, constantly put yourself in a position for success, whatever that is to you, you’ll achieve it.
