If you’re new to Virtual Assisting or freelancing, you no doubt have been told to niche down. How do you know what niche to target? How many should you target? Most importantly, why is having a niche so important? We’ll get to it. But first let’s answer the question: what is a niche?
What is A Niche?
A niche is a specialized division in a market. It’s the service or product that you bring to that particular group. Naturally when deciding on your niche, it’s good to pick something that either you are knowledgeable about, or experienced in. Or, at most, have a passion for it.
Many emphasize the need to niche down your niche. And, while that’s good if you can, it’s better to have more than one niche under your belt. Remember, just because you’ve picked your ideal niche, that doesn’t mean it can’t change over time.
Think of it like this: you want to narrow the scope when applying for work, but not to the point of where it’s not profitable. Sit down, and brainstorm some ideas! If you're having trouble, reflect on your skillset or interests.
Social Media Management
A social media manager schedules and designs content for social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. As a social media manager, you are also responsible for engaging with your clients followers and creating captions for posts.
You are also responsible for:
Expanding brand outreach and awareness
Analyze data and metrics and develop a strategy
Develop campaigns
Monitor hashtags and keep up-to-date with the latest trends
Many social media managers repurpose content (such as blogs) to align with a specific platform. You will need to know how to write copy for various social media platforms and know current copywriting techniques to stay competitive.
Executive Virtual Assistant
According to Indeed, “An Executive Assistant, or Executive Administrator, is responsible for managing the schedules and communications of key company executives. Their duties include prioritizing emails and phone calls, gathering documents to prepare for meetings and coordinating travel arrangements.”
An executive assistant is responsible for more than just run-of-the-mill tasks. It’s your job to keep all executives on task and make sure due dates are being met and train other staff on best practices.
You will be responsible for:
Being the first point of contact
Managing calendars
Arranging travel plans
Graphic Designer
If you’re the creative type and are looking to combine these two skills, a graphic designer might be a good fit. Graphic designers create social media posts, design logos and business cards and whatever else a company may need for visual content.
As a graphic designer, you will be responsible for creating:
Infographics
Brochures
eBook covers
Animation
Content and Copywriter
Both a content and copywriter use language to persuade audiences to take action. Though they’re differences between the two kinds of writing, as a writer, you will be responsible for:
Curating blogs and articles
Writing short, digestible content for readers
Using descriptive language to sell a product or service
Motivating your readers to take action
