With more people than ever using the internet, having a good digital marketing plan implemented will help you grow your brand's exposure and awareness if done correctly. Let’s get into the most asked questions about digital marketing and how it can help you scale your business.
What is Digital Marketing
Digital marketing uses digital sources to market a brand's service or product. Different types include:
Social Media Marketing
Email marketing
Content marketing
Search Engine Optimization
Affiliate marketing
You can use these different types of digital marketing to reach your target audience. We’re going to see how. But before we do, we must ask an important question.
Why Digital Marketing is Important
Because of its broad reach, small businesses should be taking full advantage of digital marketing because of its cost effectiveness. Put simply, it's cheaper and allows for more targeted marketing for your business’ ideal audience. How is it more targeted exactly?
Let’s take a look at billboard advertising as an example. It’s true that depending where you pay to advertise, millions of people can see your brand at any given time. But how many of those eyeballs are actually interested in your business? Few, if any.
Compared to social media and email marketing, those eyes who see your posts or emails took an important initial step: They followed your account and/or subscribed to your email list. Although much smaller, these people decided they liked your brand enough to take that initial step, making it more likely that they would respond positively to any email or social media campaigns. Or, at the very least, not see it as spam. Though we don’t completely knock older techniques.
Digital Marketing Like A Pro
Let’s dive into how you can use each of the marketing strategies mentioned above.
Social Media Marketing
As a small business owner, no doubt you know of walking that very thin line between advertising your service or product and not irritating your followers. You have to learn to strike that balance though and remember that your social media serves as not just a method to expand your brand voice but sell your product.
Your marketing really boils down to the content you put out. Your content needs to be entertaining, engaging, and fun. You need to know the demographics and the type of content you should post on any given platform.
Audiences vary, we recommend doing research on each platform to learn the demographic and what they best respond to and adapting your content around that.
Email Marketing
Email marketing takes the shape of email campaigns to newsletters. Besides that, email marketing still remains the number one way of marketing on social media. If you’re new to email marketing, we recommend approaching it slowly. Test subject headlines as well as different Call to Actions.
One tip we recommend is using a person's name in the sender's field. This not only makes it more personal but may be overall more appealing (and effective!) than your brands company name. Also include the recipient's name. The more personable, the better.
Lastly, use buzz words sparingly. These should be right in the subject line. Again, we can't emphasize enough to not overdo it otherwise you could have the opposite effect.
Content Marketing
Content marketing should be an entrepreneur's best friend. Content marketing ranges from blogs, articles, newsletters, videos, and even podcasts. Blogs, for example, get 67% more leads than companies that don’t have a regular blog.
Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) is what many brands use to rank in organic search results as well as rank on their social media posts. When crafting content, keywords should help shape and mold the content. Use these keywords in your titles, subtitles, and throughout your blogs or articles.
Don’t overdo it though. Just like advertising on social media, you want to sprinkle in keywords throughout. Again, it’s a bit of an art. But with practice, you’ll hit that sweet spot.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is where brands pay affiliates for driving traffic to their websites and paying for a product. With each product purchased from their link, they earn a small commission. If you use social media, no doubt you’ve seen an influencer advertise something on the behalf of a company or promoted a special code. If it’s within your budget, we recommend you do this too.
