The Joy of Letting Go

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

It is important to know when to let situations, things and people go. In life, we come across many things whether it be love, material possessions, life experiences. When to let go when things become unhealthy or toxic is vital. So what are the signs that we need to let go?

When something no longer brings you joy, it's time to reassess the situation and determine if it's just a minor setback or a major conflict with us. Are you at odds in a relationship whether it be a professional, personal, or romantic one? I remember being in a situation that once brought me so much joy. The longterm goals I had never materialized and I was left holding on to a memory of the way things used to be. I was so distraught by things not working out that I lingered in the situation because of the joy I once shared at the moment.

Now, if we get stuck in a situation that feels toxic or desperate it is easy to say just get out and let go. The truth is we are paralyzed, at times, by our feelings of failure and the poor unfortunate feeling of disappointment. The hurt disappointment brings is sometimes expressed thru anger and pain and suffering. So, what do we do when we feel despair in a situation? Here are some steps to take:

  1. Assess the situation: Have you stopped putting forth the effort to make things as special or joyous as they once were?

  2. Take a step back: Would you be better off emotionally if you just let go? Would the pain of letting go be minimal as compared to staying in the situation.

  3. Don't waste time: Time is of the essence. Do not waste even one second being lonely, sad, or unhappy in any way. The first thing you need to do is give it a chance but if it takes more time to try and make it right then maybe it's time to let go.

These are just three ways to evaluate a current situation but it is also possible you may need help deciphering right from wrong.

We all have to be cognizant of what we do. In action and in mind, we must be able to determine when things are worth our effort. If things are depleting us of joy and self-respect it's time to let go. When we look in the mirror and can't recognize the person we are because we allowed a situation or person to change us, it's time to let go.

How do I know when letting go will bring me joy?

Joy will reappear when you realize you can do better. Your gut and intuition will tell you something isn't right. Listen to it by all means. Listen to it the first time it creeps into your mind and do not suppress it! By ignoring our intuition we rob ourselves of that esteem that we hold so high and manipulate our feelings thinking we can change people or situations that just won't budge in reality.

The joy you gain by letting go will be remarkable. You will have a clear conscience and be able to do things guilt-free. You won't feel insecure about the moves you make and realize it's not always rainbows and butterflies but it takes hard work to say no and let go.

So, reclaim your joy and just let that sh*t go.
