What Is Email List Building? Top 4 Reasons Why You Need to Build One

Updated: Feb 12, 2023

If you’re a business owner, you’ve heard of email marketing and list building, and for good reason. Email marketing dominates other forms of online marketing and has the highest ROI with “$40 per dollar spent” according to Webengage.

Building an email list first requires having solid traffic to your website through organic search and social media. This means you have to have a stream of reliable, consistent content before you even begin thinking about building your email list. There’s no way around it. What are some content ideas to help you get started?

Start With a Blog

Blogging is an essential part of any successful marketing strategy. Blogs drive traffic to your website through the use of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and can be recycled and reformatted for social media content. If you’re not already doing this, you should! Blogging drives new customers and clients and builds loyalty and trust among current ones.

Blogs should be industry-specific and follow the AIDA model:

A - Attention

I - Interest

D -Desire

A - Action

A blog should also have a strong and specific Call to Action. To learn more, read our “8 Tips for Writing Successful Copy for Social Media, Blogs, and Articles.”

Write eBook!

Your eBook should be offering something of value to clients and potential clients. Through the use of eBooks, you can go into laser-focused detail on a specific topic or use it as a short and simple guide that’s easily digestible to your reader. Having an eBook or several establishes your business as an authority and supports your existing content.

Another bonus of eBook writing is that you can exchange this free resource for email addresses, hence building your email list in the process. The key, though, is to make your content desirable and keep that feeling throughout your content.

Social Media - An Invaluable Tool

Once your eBook is finished. Don’t just let it sit in the corner collecting dust. Leverage your social media through promotion. Aside from that, you can use social media to advertise special offers, deals, and sales whilst promoting your email list! You should 100% be using social media to promote gated content.

Don't just promote your content once and forget about it, keep promoting regularly. But avoid spam. Do so tactfully to avoid irritating your followers. No one wants to see you promoting your content and business on their feeds. Simply put, it looks desperate.

Newsletters

Does your business have a newsletter? It should! Again, like any other content, your newsletters need to be tantalizing to users. Offer information they can only receive through your newsletters. This is where you can talk more about your brand and your business and really take the opportunity to connect to your readers, clients, customers, etc.

More Email List Building Strategies

There are more list building strategies than what we talked about thus far. For example, when visitors are on your landing page, you can have a pop up asking them to sign up for these free, gated resources. You can also use this as an opportunity to promote deals and special offers.

Don’t ignore a strong CTA! As mentioned earlier, a Call to Action can convert entirely on its own! It’s also one of the pillars to good copywriting. So, every piece of content, from newsletters, eBooks, blogs, social media posts should all have a Call to Action.

You can also host a contest where participants exchange their email addresses to win some sort of special offer. The offer can be monetary or offering a free (or cheap) service, such as writing a free, detailed blog if you’re a Freelance Writer.
